X And Y

Did you know...

The U.S. men's basketball team, consisting of NBA players, is considered the favorite to win the medal gold. It has won an unprecedented 12 Olympic titles: Berlin 1936, London 1948, Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956, Rome 1960, Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968, Montreal 1976, Los Angeles 1984, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000.

China -it is a lot bigger than Australia- is the ideal place for any major sporting event. Beijing has successfully hosted many international sporting events, including the 2001 World University Games, the 1990 Asian Games and the 1990 FIVB World Championships..

South Korea will send 200-230 athletes to the Olympic Games in the People's Republic of China. South Korea has averaged four gold medals every 4 years since it obtained its independence in 1948. The South Korean Olympic team is one of the World's most successful, having won 215 Olympic medals...

The Chinese capital has world-class sporting stadiums. These venues were built for the Olympics. The opening and the closing ceremonies will take place in the Beijing National Stadium. The Beijing National Aquatics Centre will host the swimming competition (swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming). The cycling competition will be contested in the Laoshan Velodrome and the basketball games will be held at Wukesing Indoor Stadium...

The U.S. women's basketball team qualified for the Olympic Games in China. It has won the basketball Olympic tournament a record five times (1984, 1988, 1996, 2000, 2004). In addition, Teresa Edwards has made the most appearances in the Olympic finals, playing for the United States in 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000.

Beijing -the Olympic capital- is home to five of UNESCO's thirty-five World Cultural Heritage Sites in the People's Republic of China.

Pakistani men's field hockey qualified for the Olympics. Pakistan dominated world hockey from 1960 to 1994. This Asian country won four world championships (1971, 1978, 1982, 1994) and three Olympic championships (1960, 1968, 1984).

The Chinese capital is the home of the Asian Training Centre of the FIE. Mr Xiao Tian ( vice minister of China's General Sports Administration) said, "It is a great honour for the Chinese Fencing Federation to have been selected to establish the Asian Training Centre of the International Fencing Federation in Beijing. This illustrates the FIE's confidence in and support of the Chinese Fencing Federation".

Australia expects to send about 450 athletes to the Olympics. These athletes will compete in 23 sports: archery, artistic gymnastics, basketball (both sexes), boxing, kayak, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, football (men), rhythmic gymnastics, field hockey (both sexes), judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, softball, swimming, synchronized swimming, taekwondo, water polo (both sexes) and wrestling. Australia's swimming team will be hoping to strike gold at Beijing 2008. Among medal hopes are Libby Trickett and Leisel Jones (sportswomen). Lisbeth "Libby" Constance Trickett won 5 gold medals ( 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay, 4x100 medley relay) at the 2007 FINA World Championships in Melbourne.

Like Italy (world champion), Brazil, Russia and the United States, China is one of the favorites to win the women's Olympic volleyball tournament. Zhou Suhong (one of the best spikers in the world) said, "To win the Olympic gold medal is a dream for every player, and to win in the Beijing 2008 Games is the utmost for the Chinese".

The U.S.women's softball team is the favourite to win the Olympic title. Women's softball was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1996. The USA have won the gold medal three times at the Summer Olympics (1996, 2000, 2004).

Beijing hosted the 5th World Forum on Sport, education and Culture.

The delegation from Afghanistan will include 2-6 athletes to the Olympic Games in Beijing. For the first time in its history, Afghanistan -among the world's five poorest countries- is considered to have a good chance to win an Olympic medal. Nesar Ahmad Baharee won the silver medal at the 2007 World Taekwondo Championship. Certainly all eyes will be on Nesar when he lines up on the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium. Under poor conditions, he is training very hard in the hope of winning an Olympic medal for Afghanistan. Nesar Ahmad Baharee is an example of courage and determination for the entire world...

Portugal (Espinho) will host a men's volleyball qualifying tournament. China (host country), Brazil (world champion), Russia, Bulgaria, Egypt (African champion), Serbia, USA and Venezuela have already qualified for the Olympics.

The Chinese capital -it is one of the oldest cities in the world- will host a series of concerts and cultural events during the Olympic Games. It will be the capital of culture in 2008.

Taismary Aguero Leyva Botteghi (indoor volleyball / world champion) will be competing in her third Olympics. In the 1990s and early 2000s, she competed for Cuba. In 2006 Taismary Aguero became an Italian citizen and later competed at the European Championships in Luxembourg.

Rachel Latin Love (White Bikini, Close-Up) Framed Art Poster Print - 16" X 20"

This poster shows a close-up of Rachel Latin Love in a white bikini. This framed poster measures approx. 16" x 20" A bikini or two-piece is a type of women's swimsuit, characterized by two separate parts, leaving an uncovered area between the two garments. Two-piece garments worn by women for athletic purposes have been observed on Greek urns and paintings, dated as early as 1400 BC. Female athletes who play beach volleyball professionally are required to wear two-pieces.

One of my favorite places to facilitate music-making and foster growth and social interaction is at an Alzheimer's center or assisted living community. As a music therapist I bring a different perspective and methodology to the group experiences at these locations than the usual invited entertainers or activity leaders. I have been asked to come back to visit the Alzheimer's center based on the fact that I involve the residents in active music-making and encourage interaction and self-awareness. Given these reactions, I want to explore and recommend some of the strategies I use when approaching a group of older adults with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

I say that these groups are some of my favorite clients to work with mainly because of the dramatic change in demeanor that occurs during the music activities. When I walk into a room full of thirty to forty residents and all I hear is the sound of silence, it is sometimes intimidating. In my experience it is kind of like being in a doctor's office waiting room where nobody talks to each other! This is a very sad situation for the residents because they see each other every day but just don't remember who their neighbor is or even where they are or why they are doing a certain activity. Then the "miracle" occurs during the music-making...

The residents literally begin stirring, lifting their heads, looking around, and moving their hands and feet to the rhythm of the music. Suddenly several people start singing words to the music and others begin playing tambourines and maracas that were laying in their laps. Smiles abound and laughter filters through the crowd. I love to see the recognition on faces when some of the residents realize that they are sitting next to someone, or when they are invited to dance by a caregiver! These events are short-lived, but I think incredibly powerful injections of humanity into a place and people that time forgot.

I keep the following ideas and strategies in mind when facilitating these groups:

1. Use a microphone -- I do not have a loud voice, so it is even more important that I use amplification, not only for my voice, but also for my guitar. Even with a microphone there will still be some who complain that they cannot hear very well. The sound of the live accompaniment should be strong and supportive whether it is from a guitar or a piano. I do not recommend using a digital keyboard, but a digital piano is just fine.

2. Use songs and music from the resident's young adult years -- Research with people who have Alzheimer's has shown that memory loss happens generally in retrograde fashion. It also seems that most people tend to have a connection with music especially from their teenage and young adult years. I currently use much music from the 1930's very successfully with my groups (i.e., Alexander's Ragtime Band, Side by Side, etc.)

3. Use song cards -- Make song cards with pictures on the front and the lyrics on the back. The song cards are a good visual to help cue the group about what they are singing. The song cards are also perfect for facilitating choice-making by individuals or the group.

4. "Pass the plate" -- Use something that necessitates interaction with your neighbor. I have used a big beach ball, a treasure box, or some other object that relates to a theme. Think of an item that is good for a show and tell. Pick a song or some recorded music that indicates that the object should move around the room. When the music stops, the person holding the item can choose a song or share a memory or story that comes to mind.

5. Themes -- Group activities built around thematic ideas are a perfect way to encourage reminiscing and discussion. Consider using holidays, seasons, news events and local traditions as the basis for the songs and music selections. One of my favorites is using the sun, moon and stars as a theme whenever the space shuttle takes off or there is an eclipse or meteor shower in the news. There are many songs that talk about the sun, moon or stars that the residents know and love!

6. Have a drum circle -- Community drum circles are appropriate for all ages and adaptable to almost any situation. The drum circle promotes group interaction and allows for individuals to be creative while participating at their ability level. Some clients will feel self-empowered by being drum circle facilitators. Please see my posts under the categories section for "drumming" for an extensive set of articles about how to use drum circles with groups who have disabilities.

7. Go with the flow! -- This concept may take some trial and error and experience, but planning is the key. Try to arrange the activities for the group experience into a contour of activity that begins and ends with less energy and has increased energy in the middle of the music session. The residents need time to wake up and begin feeling the music stimuli before they will be willing to dance and play instruments. It is also appropriate to help them return to a normal mental, emotional and physical energy state before stopping the group activities.

8. Shakers, drums and bells, oh my! -- Use as many different types of small percussion instruments that you can find so that everyone has something to make music with. Active music making is very important and cannot be left out. Playing instruments immediately changes the passive listener to a more focused participant who will be more likely to answer questions, make choices and provide spontaneous feedback.

9. Dance! -- Movement to music can also include dancing while sitting down. Props like scarves, ribbons, gloves and costume pieces are useful in cuing movement to music. Using recorded music for the activity can provide valuable time for you to personally interact with the group members.

10. Have fun! -- It will show, and your energy and excitement will be contagious.

On Phoenix Wings in Flight

Everybody knows that we can download music online, but the difficult part is finding out and deciding where to download music online. This is obviously a much more convenient and much cheaper option than stepping into the music store and buying a CD. There are lots of people who have completely stopped doing that in favor of downloading.

There are so many options that it is very difficult to make a decision regarding where to download music from. There are different options no matter where you look, so it is no wonder that people get lost and confused! Besides, so many sites make so many promises that people invariably get skeptical. This wide array can be broken into three categories.

1. Peer-to-peer transfer websites

Peer-to-peer or P2P file transfer is mostly free. That is the whole basis of these programs. This is a form of file sharing. But to do this, you have to download and install certain software. There is no guarantee that the file you download will be safe or even what you wanted. Apart from that, the software can cause damage to your hard drive. So, keep in mind that when you answer the question where to download music, whether it is free or not is not the only consideration.

2. Pay-per-download websites

If the reason you want to download is that you think CDs are two expensive, this option is not for you. Sites like iTunes have huge databases and a lot of music, and you can rest assured that all the files will be safe and will play on your player with no problems. However, whether you choose to pay per download or pay a monthly subscription, eventually there will not be much difference in expenditure whether you buy the CD or download from these sites. You may also find that once your subscription ends, you cannot play these files.

3. Pay once with lifetime membership websites

These websites let you download as many songs as you like after you pay once. It counts as a lifetime membership on that site. This fee is rarely more than $50, and there will be no charges at all after that. You can do whatever you like with the songs after you download them - burn CDs, move them, anything at all.

There are more options that answer the question of from where to download music. Some websites offer a combination of pay-per-download as well as subscription, but this is not exactly the best offer financially. If you want to download often, a lifetime membership is your best bet. Plus, it is undisputedly legal.

You can fill your player with all the songs you love best, as soon as you decide which option is right for you, without overpaying or messing up your player or computer. All your options regarding where to download music from are right here - revealed and obvious!

Leadsinger LS-3C07 R&B, Motown, Latin Cartridge for LS-3000 Series Karaoke System (200 Songs)

200 songs for your Leadsinger LS-3000/LS-3700 portable All-In-The-Mic karaoke system / Contains songs from Stevie Wonder, Nat King Cole, Enrique Iglesias
Customer Review: Great Karaoke System
This cartridge adds 200 songs to the basic system. I has a good variety of music that I like. I highly recommend it.

If you are starting to learn to sing, but haven't found a teacher yet, you may find it hard to know which songs to try out on your own. People often start by picking something by their favourite singer, but all too often this means they are attempting a song that is way too hard for a beginner. For instance, stars like Mariah Carey or Leona Lewis are able to sing very high notes and complicated rhythms, so these may not be easy songs for beginners. That's why I have compiled a list of great songs for beginners.

In my twenty years of teaching singing, I have found the following songs to be of huge benefit to the student when starting to learn to sing. The songs have been selected because they display the following characteristics:

Memorable melody

Not too high

Good length of phrases

No awkward leaps or intervals

Straight forward rhythm

In English

Here's the list:

  1. Amazing Grace (traditional)
  2. Blue Moon (Richard Rodgers)
  3. Summertime (Gershwin)
  4. Autumn Leaves (Josef Kosma)
  5. Top of the World (The Carpenters)
  6. He's got the Whole world in His hands (spiritual)
  7. Oh when the Saints go marching in (trad)
  8. I don't know how to love him (from Jesus Christ Superstar)
  9. On my Own (from Les Miserables)
  10. My Bonnie lies over the Ocean (trad Scottish)
  11. Swing Low sweet Chariot (trad)
  12. You are my Sunshine (Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell)

As you can see, quite a few of these songs are traditional songs. Generally speaking, traditional songs can be a good choice as they tend to be simple without a big range. So, once you have mastered some of the above list, you can easily find more traditional songs to try out, by searching on the internet or going to a music library.

Clocks 3

The Second of Three Single Parts of One of the Standout Songs from their "a Rush of Blood to the Head" Breakthrough Album. Each Part Includes Exclusive Live Tracks Recorded at Rotterdam's Famed Ahoy Ballroom in 2002.

The conga drum is widely used in many countries around the globe but is believed to have mainly originated in both Africa and Cuba, and is often called the Afro-Cuban drum or Afro-Cuban barrel-shaped drum. Today, congas, which are played either singly or using several drums, are a large part of Latino-American music, and those who play this unique instrument are referred to as congueros.

Conga drums are narrow, tall, and have varying widths ranging from nine inches across the drumhead to 14 inches across, with the size affecting the sound and pitch of the drums. Larger congas are used for playing lower, deeper rhythms, while the smaller, or quinto drums are used for playing the melodies. When playing several conga drums together, they most often are tuned to one particular chord.

In English, the word conga is used to refer to the single-headed drum, and congas for sets of three individual drums, which includes a higher pitched drum known as the quinto, the lowest pitched called the tumbadora, and the medium-sized drum, called either the conga or the segundo. However, throughout Cuba, the Spanish name tumbadora, which is a more accurate term, is commonly used to describe the drums and is more widely used rather than conga or congas. In Cuba, the word conga is only used when describing drums that are specifically played during Carnaval, which is similar to the annual Mardi Gras celebration in the United States.

Conga drums are typically made from woods such as oak, ash, or beech, although the fiberglass congas of today are gaining in popularity as they can be more durable and are usually far less expensive. Although, many professional congueros who have mastered the techniques still prefer the traditional wooden congas, stating that the sounds produced are warmer and richer than with the newer fiberglass sets.

Congas made from ash wood tend to produce more resonant tones, while oak models are said to give a warmer sound along with reducing overtones that are similar to those made when using synthetic materials.

Today drumheads are also made from synthetic materials, although traditionally, heads made from cowhide were used for the most melodious of sounds, while in more modern times, water buffalo hide was the preferred material of choice to create crisper, cleaner tones.

Typically, buffalo skins are more expensive while other rawhide drumheads are generally found on the less pricier congas. Synthetic heads created to mimic the sounds of natural materials may be beneficial to the more inexperienced player as they produce a brighter, louder tone when played, and also tend to be more durable.

As with any type of musical instrument, craftsmanship and the best materials are of the utmost importance. The use of quality materials and finely honed skills will produce a better set of drums that's not only easier to tune or play, but one that will also sound better. Even beginners are encouraged to purchase a well-made set of congas that will still be sufficient as their experience grows and their skills increase.

Played with both hands using the fingertips and the palms of the hands, congas produce a wide variety of sounds that can be loosely described as either open or muffled tone, slap, open or muffled slap, bass tone, fingers, or palm. Experts recommend learning how to invoke the many different sounds before mastering hand coordination, and then finally concentrating on the rhythm aspect of playing conga drums.

The open tone stroke is played using four fingers, striking close to the rim of the drumhead which produces a clear, distinct sound. The muffled tone stroke, similar to the open tone, is also made using four fingers, but then involves keeping the fingers against the drumhead to muffle the sound produced. For a low, more muted sound, opt for the bass tone stroke using the full palm of the hand to strike the drumhead.

The most well known rhythm for congas is known as the tumbao, which uses a 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2 rhythm with the first two played with muffled tones, and the latter using open tones. Another most popular rhythm is called the bolero rhythm (1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3) which uses two congas and has most recently been heard on songs by artists such as Andrea Bocelli in Besame Mucho and Luis Miguel in La Puerta.

Some of the most widely known congueros are Desi Arnez, who was the influence behind the naming of a small conga known as the "Ricardo" from his television role, Candido Camero, Giovanni Hidalgo, Arsenio Rodriguez, and Poncho Sanchez. Many types of modern music, including jazz, Latin jazz, salsa, mambo, and rumba, still rely on conga drums to keep the beat and produce a variety of unique sounds.

You can buy your Conga Drum or Tumbadora and many other world musical instruments Online at http://www.yourworldinstruments.comOnce you enjoy playing rhythm patterns on your Congas, you can try other Drums like the Djembe, Ashiko, Bongo Drums and enjoy their distinctive sound and styles.

When planning a wedding there are many details to consider. Part of the planning, especially for an evening wedding reception, will include music. Whether you choose to have a DJ or a live band, the music style as well as your first dance song will be part of your decision-making.

For this choice, there can be as many sources of inspiration as there are couples, but if you're looking for ideas, here are a few tips to help get the ball rolling...and the music playing!

- First Dance Romance: For your first dance wedding song, is there a song that is special to you and your spouse-to-be? Perhaps one which reminds you of when you first met, or was playing on your first date. The song need only be special to the two of you; for your first dance, no one else in the Universe matters.

- Ask your parents: Is there a type of music that was popular back when they met or got married? For example, many couples choose to pay tribute and thanks to their parents by choosing to include some music from their parents' era at their weddings. This can be very touching for members of the guestlist who are old enough to remember the music, and will enjoy the nostalgia.

- Culture: If there is a culture one or both of you come from and would like to honor, ask some relatives for their choice in songs which come from this unique background. Again, a few choices in this genre will be very much appreciated by guests to whom this music would be very special.

The term Ballroom Dancing is the most general and the oldest term that is used to describe formal dances and generally includes Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep and Viennese Waltz dances as well as some of the Latin dances. There two types of waltz in this group, the Classic Waltz and the Viennese Waltz.

The Classic Waltz is known as the mother of dances as it was the first dance where people actually danced in front of each other. This made it a very exciting dance when it was first introduced. It is based on an 18th century Austrian folk-dance and the steps are based on a box step with a rotary motion. The Classic Waltz, or the 'slow' or 'English' Waltz as it is sometimes called, is known for a gliding motion with a slight rise and fall and is normally danced to a slow tempo which requires a large degree of control to dance well.

The Viennese Waltz on the other hand is elegant and beautiful to watch. It is sometimes seen in movies and even Disney cartoons! As the name suggests it is linked to Vienna where the Aristocracy danced the Viennese Waltz to music by Strauss and other classical composers. The Viennese Waltz is a faster movement than the Classical Waltz, and is danced at about 180 beats (58-60 measures) a minute, as opposed to about 90 beats per minute with 3 beats to the bar for the Classical Waltz.

The Viennese Waltz is a rotary motion where the dancers are constantly turning either in a clockwise (natural) or anti-clockwise (reverse) direction. This is interspersed with non-rotating change steps to switch between the directions of rotation. Furthermore, in a properly danced Viennese Waltz, couples do not pass, but turn continuously left and right while they travel counterclockwise around the floor following each other in procession. Although this dance is still danced on social occasions, it is more usual for the Classical Waltz to be used.

In the Standard dances such as the waltzes, men traditionally wear formal coat-tails, vests or waistcoats, and bow ties. Women wear elegant and colorful gowns, often with sheer fabric draped from the shoulders or arms. Partners remain in closed position facing each other, throughout the dance, and movements tend to be elegant and sweeping.

American Smooth allows more open work where the partners can separate from each other and dance in open positions. American Smooth can be best described as a variation of ballroom dancing with an enhanced range of movements and exciting steps. All basic principles and the technique of ballroom dancing still apply, however partners are not required to maintain a continuous body contact. The removal of the body contact restriction allows the dancers to perform a variety of new steps such as: lady under arm turns, spins, side by side positions, parallel turns, dips, drops and other variations that would never be allowed in the traditional ballroom dancing.

The term 'Ballroom' has been used to describe Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep and Viennese Waltz as a group of dances together with a range of Latin dances such as the Rumba, Quickstep and Cha-Cha-Cha. Ballroom dances may have at one time also included historical dances like Minuet, Quadrille, Polonaise, Pas de Gras, and Mazurka. However there was no standard definition and so as different dances were introduced new terms were introduced to differentiate these. "Modern Ballroom" (in short "Modern"), was introduced in Britain to referring to Old Time, Sequence or Latin-American dances.

But in Europe the term "Modern" was already frequently used to describe a totally different type of dancing (eg. jazz or other form of solo dancing), so the term Standard was introduced instead. But "Standard" had an unclear meaning in America, where there is an American version of it called American Smooth. Therefore American's introduced the term "International Standard" to make the difference clear.

In spite of its historical image as a pastime for the privileged; formal competitions, sometimes referred to as DanceSport, allow participation by less advanced dancers at various proficiency levels. In the United States, amateur dance proficiency levels are defined by USA Dance (formerly United States Amateur Ballroom Dance Association,) The International Olympic Committee now recognizes competitive ballroom dance. It is doubtful that it will be included as an official sport in the Olympic Games especially in light of efforts to reduce the number of offerings, but the application has not been permanently rejected.

Of all of the dances, the Waltz is the perfect one to learn first. It can be learnt in a few minutes and yet can take a lifetime to master.
