Encanto

Brazilian music legend Sergio Mendes spins his remarkable magic on his newest recording, a bona fide classic! This is a kaleidoscopic album that underscores the maestro's ear for addictive melodies, as well as his ability to cast incredibly talented singers and musicians from all over the world
Customer Review: a review for Brasil '66 fans
It's been around 40 years since Mendes reached an artistic and commercial peak with several classic albums that successfully mixed bossa nova, jazz, and pop music. Those albums still sound fresh today, thanks to the terrific songs, latin rhythms and some sparkling arrangements. Since then, Mendes has experimented with mixing his Brazilian sound with folk rock, funk, dance music, hip hop, and on "Encanto," some r&b. As someone who prefers the work he did with Brasil '66 to anything more recent, to my ears the album is pleasant though generally forgettable with the exception of a few wonderful tracks. Unsurprisingly the best tracks are those with strong melodies by Antonio Carlos Jobim, in particular "Somewhere in the Hills" and "Dreamer," both of which are direct descendants of the sound of Brasil '66. "Dreamer" includes both Herb Alpert and Lani Hall, who sounds remarkably like she did when she was fronting Brasil '66. This is a genuinely stunning track and easily the best on the album. Natalie Cole sings "Somewhere in the Hills" which is appropriately jazzy and is one of Jobim's strongest melodies. Other Jobim tracks include "Waters of March" which Mendes has covered several times in the past. It's a singer's song, and sounds a little rhythmically stiff here, as it has in his previous efforts. "Morning in Rio" is also good, with a more Brazilian styled melody and a nice trombone solo. The rest of the CD is listenable, but not such that I ever want to hear most of it again. "The Look of Love" is an unnecessary remake of a good song. What made the original great was a sensational big band arrangement which has been dropped in favor of a hip hop arrangement. I liked the Brazilian styled funk of "Odo-ya" and the mellow "Catavento" with Mendes' wife on lead vocals. On the other hand, "Funky Bahia" and "Lugar Comum," the latter of which features an Italian rapper doing a little snippet of "Volare," are disposable pop/hip hop songs. If I could get into Mendes' head, I would try to convince him do an album of Jobim and Marcos Valle songs with Herb Alpert and Lani Hall and a small jazz/bossa combo. It might not sell a million copies, but it would be an artistic triumph. If you're an unreconstructed fan of Brasil '66 as I am, I can recommend this with reservations. You might be better off just downloading a handful of tracks. But "Dreamer" should not be missed.
Customer Review: Summery and enchanting.
"Encanto" follows the highly acclaimed 2006 collaboration with will.i.am Timeless and with this latest release, Sergio takes us even deeper into Brazil, having recorded all the basic tracks in Rio and Bahia and finally finishing up in in California, where the studio band included Alphonso Johnson. For "Encanto" (in Spanish for Enchantment), Mendes has also enlisted the formidable and enchantingly diverse talents of an array of guest musicians who hail from the world over. Latin superstar Juanes from Colombia and multi-talented Carlinhos Brown & Vanessa da Mata from Brazil jostle alongside the foremost Japanese pop group Dreams Come True, Belgium's Zap Mama and Italian rapper Jovanotti. This international cast is completed by the American stars Fergie, Siedah Garrett and Herb Alpert who is accompanied by his wife, original Brasil '66 singer, Lani Hall. Old smoothie Mendes gets jiggy on a selection of bossa-favourites with a raft of guest stars including the ubiquitous Will.i.am and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, Natalie Cole and Herb Alpert et all... This new album essentially is a cross between Mendes' soft, salsa-tinged melodies and modern day R'n'B. The opening track, "The Look of Love" with rap/vocals by Fergie, is a deliciously moreish funky-fusion, and for the first third or so, the combination of Sergio's Rhodes with the hip-hopped production style is terrific. Perhaps this new version of Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love", which Mendes had originally transposed to bossa nova heaven in 1967 is the boldest track on "Encanto". This new interpretation, produced by Black Eyed Peas will.i.am, preserves the alluring melody of the original while bringing the song into the new millennium with crisp drum programming and a sexy rap by Fergie. Then it goes all smooth jazz on you. Not bad, though. Whether you are a Sergio Mendes fan especially the earlier stuff, Brasil 66, Equinox, etc or a Black Eyed Peas fan, or indeed R&B then there's something on this album to please everyone. I'd say for such a challenging album there are only a couple of songs that are just to heavy hip hop for me. The rest is a joy to listen to, if you are open minded about remixes and love to see what Sergio has been up to. This album is a grower. The more I listen to it, the better it gets. You will like it. Picks of the album: "The Look of Love", "Waters Of March", "Dreamer", and "Somewhere In The Hills (O Morro Nao Tem Vez)". CP 9" & 10" Red Fiberglass Conga Set with Stand

Total height of the set ranges from 33" to 45-1/2" (from the floor to the top of the drum heads). A great conga set for musicians in the early elementary or middle school age range!

Music can help to create the right atmosphere and set the mood during the wedding ceremony and during the wedding celebrations. Deciding which music should be played at you wedding is one of the most important decisions you need to make when planning your special day.

An important factor in choosing your music is the setting for your wedding ceremony. If your ceremony will be in a church or synagogue, you will probably be required to stay within the guidelines set by the Church or synagogue.

There are two aspects of wedding music that need to be addressed when planning your big day. First, you may wish to select certain music or arrange for professional soloists or musicians to play during the actual wedding ceremony. But at the wedding reception, it's pretty much anything goes when it comes to selecting wedding music, provided it's tasteful. Everyone's requirements are different so don't be afraid to discuss any special requirements with whoever you're hiring.

Start planning your wedding music early. Good talent gets booked fast and you don't want to end up having to select the brand new DJ with only a few weddings under his belt or something even worse. Booking your music a full year in advance is advisable but at a minimum, you should know who will be showing up and what he or she will be playing at least six months prior to the wedding date.

For most weddings, selecting the music for the wedding ceremony isn't that complicated because most often, it's controlled by the person in charge at the location where the ceremony will take place. When you're researching your wedding ceremony options, be sure to inquire about any guidelines with respect to wedding ceremony music as these could possibly impact your decision. If the ceremony is being held outdoors, check for electrical hook-ups or book live musicians.

Wedding music during the ceremony is basically secondary to the ceremony itself so the music is really meant to sort of 'fill in the gaps' during the non-speaking periods such as while guests are being seated, during the procession, and while lighting the unity candles. Of course, it's your wedding and it can be custom-designed.

The music that's played at the reception, however, is going to mean the difference between a successful reception and one that's ho-hum. And this is where things can start to get complicated. When you begin searching for wedding reception music, you'll realize rather quickly that you have a lot of options. You can book a live band, or a DJ that'll play pre-recorded music, or you can buy that CD full of top wedding songs and have someone act as the DJ.

It's important that you both agree on the type of wedding music you want played at your reception. There are 'traditional' songs that almost always are played at certain points during the reception such as the father/daughter dance, the cake cutting, the dollar dance and so on. And then there is all the music in between. Do you want jazz, country, R&B, new age, Italian, Latin, Jewish-inspired, or a little bit of everything? That's an important decision to make because the musicians you select have to be able to deliver what you want or you won't be happy.

Your specific choice of music should be discussed with the musicians well before the event and they should be able to provide you with some ideas. Try to book experienced professionals for your wedding music. Always ask for and check references. Even contact the Better Business Bureau. If booking live talent, arrange to hear a live performance before booking. Scrutinize the contract before signing to make sure all parties agree on the number of hours music will be provided and that everything that has been agreed to is in writing. Find out the cancellation and refund policy, too.

Your wedding day will be one of the most treasured memories of your life. Selecting the right wedding music can take a lot of time and effort, so start planning early.

Complices

Luis Miguel returns in 2008 hotter than ever with his long awaited studio album, Complices. This sensational worldwide music artist has released 23 albums and sold over 52 million albums in his career. Internationaly known for his romantic ballads, crooning vocals, and chart topping hits, Luis Miguel has sold out shows around the world. Manuel Alejandro has joined in the production of Complices bringing even more star power to this this album.
Customer Review: A good album destroyed by three songs
The album Should have not included the three songs mentioned in the previous review. These songs cut the flow of the mood, they are faster and over produced. I can't believe Luis Miguel is still singing those poppy cheesy styled songs he used to sing in the eighties. It is a shame to ruin such a great line up of songs with three songs that should have been sung by Tom Jones. I believe an album that consists mostly of ballads should include mid tempo, sexy, groovy songs to break the monotony, not cheesy poppy disco songs with choruses that will make your woman jump out of your bed and attach herself to the ceiling like a freaked-out tarantula. Luis Miguel should sing ballads,R&B,soul,Jazz, even sexy chilled-out house, but leave those songs for Tom Jones, he is the king of that style.
Customer Review: Now the marvel of Complices.
This disk is for the sensitive people and the people that understand music. It's not a contemporary radioplay. Luis Miguel interprets beatifully every song. Passion and provocative poetry are in each song of the disc. Luis Miguel and Manuel Alejandro created a great joy for those who know about music.

My mother is actually a big fan of this show and so i bought her the dvds. She loves them and watches em each night before she goes to bed. Good purchase and shipped quickly as well.
Customer Review: Easily just as good as the first season.
This season has so many great episodes with that classic Home Movies style of humor, that anyone who loved the first season would have no reason not to love this one too. Yes, the animation doesn't "squiggle" anymore but this shouldn't concern anyone thinking about purchasing as it doesn't detract from the show at all.

Who You Are

At some point of your guitar playing career, you will discover The Beatles, in fact some players never recover from this intoxicating musical experience.

It's hard to imagine the musical world without this famous group. Whether you are an ardent Beatles fan or a working musician in a cover band it's important to able to authentically play some tunes.

There has been hundreds of articles, books etc written about The Beatles telling the reader "what" the Beatles did, I'm going to approach The Beatles music from a different perspective and look at "why" they did it.

By understanding "why" a particular group chose certain musical resources the guitarist/musician moves from merely imitating a sound to being able to create his or her own sound based on proven time tested musical examples and formulas... and as we all know The Beatles formula certainly works!

As most guitarists own an acoustic guitar the following tips are offered primarily in mind, however these ideas can be applied to electric guitar as well.

Tip 1. Blues progressions ...

Often guitarists underestimate the importance of learning to recognizing blues chord progressions by ear, in fact the term 'Blues' often conjures up images of smokey jazz clubs etc., something that the rock or pop guitarist may have no particular interest in at present.

It's important to keep in mind how groups like the Beatles learnt their craft. Countless hours of jamming with a good dose of blues chord progressions resulting in songs such as ...

Boys/ Chains/ Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Money (That's What I Want)

In addition to these blues based original compositions The Beatles or individual members of The Beatles often recorded cover versions of well known blues based tunes such as Kansas City and Be Bop A Lula (By Paul McCartney -Unplugged Album).

Tip 2. Harmonized scale ...

The Beatles are a very interesting group to study because of their mixture of blues styled songs blended with traditional classical music principals.

Whereas the blues scale is one of the most unique and frequently used scale in pop/ rock music because of it's flexibility and feeling The Beatles were aware of the benefit of using contrasting musical material that stem from European musical culture i.e., the European diatonic scales.

Listen to the final set of chords in "Let It Be" and you will hear a good example of how Paul McCartney harmonized scale in the descending chord progression.

"Let It Be" is in the key of C Major which produces the following chords: C major / D minor/ E minor/ F major/ G major/ A minor/ B diminished

As example of how Paul applies the harmonized scale would be if the basic chord progression is F major to C major, Paul would often play: F major to E minor then D minor and finally arrive at C major.

As you can see he simply played the two minor chords that exist in between the F major chord and the C major.

Tip 3. Slash chords ...

This is a favorite of the Beatles, a slash chord is written in the following manner: A/B

In this example the chord is represented by the first letter whilst the second letter identifies the specific bass note the composer wants to hear.

Therefore our chord would be an "A" major chord with a "B" note in the bass.

Have a listen to "The Long And Winding Road" for a classic example of this ambiguous sounding chord.

After the lyrics ... "The Long And Winding Road", you will hear two chords, that's our slash chords.

There's a wealth of rich chord progressions and musical ideas in the music of The Beatles waiting to be discovered by the guitarist with an inquiring mind. Persistent, patient study will reveal many new sounds that can be applied to all styles of music.

Live 2003

Over the past four years, Chinese culture has experienced a remarkable renaissance in the form of an international theatrical phenomenon known as the "Chinese New Year Spectacular." The production has grown from seven performances in five cities in 2004 to 76 performances in 30 cities for 2007.

The distinguishing feature of this production is that its artists and creators have immersed themselves deeply in China's ancient traditions, which have been systematically suppressed for over half a century. Never before have China's traditions and culture been expressed on such a grand scale internationally. The shimmering reemergence of this beautiful culture is the secret to the phenomenal success of the Spectacular, which is constantly evolving with the creation of new programs.

Traditional Chinese culture inspired many of the greatest achievements of humankind. Nurtured in Taoism, Buddhism, Confucian thought, and a deep sense of spiritual reverence and moral obligation, it infused the thoughts, actions, art, poetry, music, dance, and architecture during the 5,000-year parade of China's dynasties. Artists from all over the world, including many who were initially from mainland China, have come together to journey into this vast and profound history to bring forth the theatrical creations that make up the Spectacular.

Many of China's cultural artifacts and records still exist, having survived the openly stated intent of China's communist regime to completely eradicate all traditional Chinese culture during the Cultural Revolution, which lasted from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. During this cultural catastrophe, thousands of temples, countless paintings, sculptures, scrolls, poems, and other precious artifacts were destroyed. It was a period of extreme violence and spiritual devastation. But 5,000 years are not easily eradicated. The deeply rooted beliefs and traditions survived, if silently, in the hearts of many Chinese.

In recent years there has been an increasing international interest in things Chinese. China's communist regime has taken up this cue and has exported numerous Chinese "cultural" performances. But on close examination, one is presented with a fundamental contradiction. The Communist regime's atheist ideology and culture directly oppose the entirety of China's 5,000-year culture before the communists overtook the country in 1949. Spirituality, religion, and the moral observances of China's history have been openly disdained by the regime and considered superstitious and ridiculous, believed only by those who are deceived and ignorant. Communist culture is, in fact, the antithesis of China's traditional culture.

What is it, then, that has been presented as Chinese culture in recent years? There are certainly some skilled performers,
designers, and significant financial resources put into the production and marketing of these presentations. However, without genuine understanding and respect for the beliefs and traditions, can this be Chinese culture? When the guiding ideology disdains these traditions and beliefs, can there be anything genuine beyond the copies of costumes, utilization of traditional instruments, and surface representation of architecture through sets?

Gymnasts tumbling in traditional clothing cannot convey the profound inner meaning of traditional Chinese culture. A stage full of aggressive drummers brashly pounding away also ends up empty. What is vital is the intent behind it all, the inner purpose that motivates every move, every drumbeat, every musical note, and every stitch of clothing.

So if not traditional Chinese culture, then, what is it that China has been exporting in recent years? This is precisely communist culture. And it is in perpetual change of disguise. While either wearing traditional Chinese costumes or in the curious and ill-fitting attempts to emulate Western culture, these communist disguises have nothing inside.

Communist culture amounts to atheism, a disdain for spirituality, the belief that there is nothing beyond this one life, and that humans must strive to continually struggle and contend with one another. That spiritual void, mixed with the now fervent capitalist aspirations, results in short-sighted pursuit of material gain without moral parameters so as to indulge to the fullest in the journey of this singular life: a cocktail for chaos. This is China's communist culture. Its very survival demands a disguise. To imagine its true representation on stage brings nothing to mind.

The artists of the Spectacular have completely devoted themselves to understanding and conveying the ancient traditions. They have made an artist's sacrifice. Much like painters who have endured years of harsh conditions to understand and recreate the essence of beautiful landscapes, the artists of the Spectacular have likewise embarked on a noble, some would say, sacred journey. This is the tangible experience of audience members who have been enthralled and deeply moved by this cultural phenomenon that has resulted in the soaring growth of the Spectacular in four short years.

Exitos en Video

Customer Review: Sound engeneer where are you?
The sound quality is horrendous, Mana make a lot of money off there fans I could not believe my ears. I end up play the cd and the videos Simultaneously to be happy. A live concert DVD is needed MANA.
Customer Review: Great Mexican rock band, great songs but...
When they made the DVD, there are some things they should have changed on it. If you're a Mana fan, you'll know all the songs. One live track, a cover of "El Rey" filmed in Montreux Switerland shows of Alex Gonzalez's drumming, something that doesn't come through on their studio tracks. As far as the videos themselves go, you see it going from something that is borderline public access video, to some embarrassing videos that are kind of humorous, to a more polished look towards the "Suenos Liquidos" videos, where it ends. Nothing from "Revolucion de Amor" or their song with Carlos Santana "Corazon Espinado" (which is on Carlos' "Supernatural" DVD) is included. Here's the complaints that I found more annoying than anything: the cover of Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain", straight off of the "Econium" tribute video is them in the studio talking about recording the song. It either should be the full song or in the "extras". It's something that you wind up forwarding and gets annoying real fast. "Clavado En Un Bar" has 5 minutes of the "making of", yet you can't skip the making of, you have to forward it. Another one that belongs in the "extras". It's something that we should be able to enjoy with the TV on or off. The "in betweens" can get a little noisy at times but isn't a big deal. It's not in Surround Sound, but you can hear it playing in all the speakers. I'd like to see them revamp this one a little bit to make it more "DVD-friendly" and put out a live DVD which shows off how great they are in concert. Even if you don't understand Spanish, the music alone is good enough to enjoy...

Customer Review: Great gift!
I purchased this for my 22 year old son. He is an avid guitarist and is enjoying the book while home on winter break for college. He has been playing for 7 years and asked for this for Christmas.
Customer Review: A must-read for any guitarist looking to take it to the next level
Guthrie Govan proves not only to be an amazing guitarist, but also an excellent teacher. This book will have you feeling inspired to say the least. After reading many of the sections in this book I felt as excited to touch the guitar as I did the first time years ago. Guthrie's love for music and especially the guitar is inspirational. This is by far the best guitar book I have ever read. Not only does it provide excellent technical strategies, but it also gives great insight on how and why certain sounds are produced. The book maintains a light-hearted approach and will not leave you disappointed pick it up if you want to play better.
